PCHK Holiday Happy Hour THURSDAY this week!


Greetings Tigers!

This year, our annual Holiday Happy Hour party will be held on Thursday -do not adjust your set, it is THURSDAY, a change from our usual Friday- this week, the 15th of December outside of G-Bar on the top level of IFC Mall (just like last year!). Come celebrate the holidays, relax and have a drink with us as we kick off the holiday season!

Location: Lounge seating outside G-Bar, IFC Podium 4 (on the Four Seasons side of the roof of the mall)

Ivy Ball - Saturday, June 25, 2011

Dear Tigers,

It's that time of the year again! You are cordially invited to Ivy Ball 2011. As most of you know, the Ivy Ball has been organized annually by the Hong Kong alumni associations of Ivy League member schools - Brown, Columbia, Cornell, Dartmouth, Harvard, UPenn, Princeton and Yale - and MIT since 1989.  It is one of the year's most highly-anticipated events and has consistently attracted hundreds of Ivy League alumni and their guests year after year.

This year’s event, "Broadway", will be held at the Grand Hyatt Ballroom on June 25th, 2011, and promises to be an evening of fun, excitement and celebration.

Princeton Event: Shaw Studios Private Tour, Saturday, May 21st


Dear Tigers,

Very special opportunity on Saturday, May 21st!  Lloyd Chao '81 has very kindly arranged for a limited number of us to visit Shaw Studios for a private tour.  First come, first served on acceptances, so please reserve your place as soon as possible.

The schedule is 10:45 am arrival at the Studio Canteen for a brief introduction, then the private tour of the Studios (a walking tour that lasts about 90 minutes) and finish back at the Canteen for a casual lunch. The tour itself is free; lunch and transportation are self-pay.

Special Princeton Dinner Mar. 21st: - Sir Gordon Wu / Dr. William Fung / Engineering Dean Vince Poor

The Princeton Club of Hong Kong invites you to dinner and a panel discussion on Monday, March 21st featuring Princeton’s two HK-based trustees, Sir Gordon Wu and Dr. William Fung, and the Dean of Princeton’s School of Engineering and Applied Science, Dr. Vince Poor (please see their bios below).

Following an update on the University and its increasing activities in Asia from three of its leaders, the panelists are interested to hear feedback from the local Princeton community via an open Q&A session.

Introductions of the Panelists

Sir Gordon Y.S. Wu ’58 P92 P94 h83, GBS, KCMG, FICE, is Chairman of the Board of the Asian infrastructure firm Hopewell Holdings Ltd., one of Hong Kong's largest real estate developers and a major player in large-scale engineering projects in China, Thailand, and Philippines. Sir Gordon graduated from Princeton with a Bachelor of Science degree in Engineering in 1958, and received Honorary Doctorate degrees from Hong Kong Polytechnic University, University of Strathclyde and University of Edinburgh. For more than forty years, Sir Gordon has developed and implemented a dynamic vision for advanced transport, public works, and infrastructure systems for China as well as for other countries in Asia.

Sir Gordon’s public service has been extensive, as a member of the Commission on Strategic Development of the Hong Kong SAR, the Chinese People’s Political Consultative Conference, the Business Advisory Council to the International Finance Corporation of the World Bank Group, the APEC Business Advisory Council, and the International Advisory Board of the Institute for International Business Communications.

Sir Gordon was elected to the Princeton Board of Trustees in 2008.


Dr. William Fung Kwok Lun ’70 P02, SBS, OBE, JP, Managing Director of Li and Fung, Ltd. of Hong Kong, graduated from Princeton with a Bachelor of Science in Engineering, holds an MBA from Harvard Business School, and was awarded, honoris causa, doctorates in Business Administration conferred by the Hong Kong University of Science and Technology and by the Hong Kong Polytechnic University. Dr. Fung is an entrepreneur who has revolutionized international trade through the concept of "borderless manufacturing," an energetic use of global outsourcing. Drawing from his education and business experience and acumen, he co-authored Competing in a Flat World: Building Enterprises for a Borderless World (Wharton School Publishing, 2007).

Dr. Fung was Chairman of the Pacific Economic Cooperation Council (PECC) and a member of the Economic Advisory Committee to the Financial Secretary. He is a past Chairman of both the Hong Kong General Chamber of Commerce and the Hong Kong Exporters’ Association. He sat on the board of HSBC Holdings and CLP Holdings Ltd.. In the public service arena, he was a Hong Kong SAR delegate to the Chinese People’s Political Consultative Conference.

Dr. Fung was elected to the Princeton Board of Trustees in 2009.


Dr. Vince Poor *77 is Princeton’s Dean of the School of Engineering and Applied Science and the Michael Henry Strater University Professor of Electrical Engineering.

He joined Princeton’s faculty in 1990, and has served as dean of engineering since 2006. Prior to joining the Princeton faculty, he was a faculty member at the University of Illinois, and he has held visiting appointments at a number of other institutions, including Harvard, Stanford and Imperial College (London).

As dean, Dr. Poor is responsible for the leadership of the engineering school, which comprises six academic departments and multiple research centers, and involves approximately 1/5 of Princeton’s undergraduates, 1/4 of its graduate students, and 1/3 of its research expenditures. In particular, he is responsible for realizing the engineering school’s vision of educating leaders for a technological world, with a focus on four major areas of societal need: energy, environment, health and security.

As a faculty member, Dean Poor’s teaching and research interests lie primarily in the area of wireless networking and related fields. He has authored or co-authored more than 1,000 publications in these fields, including a dozen books. Dean Poor is a member of the U. S. National Academy of Engineering, and is a Fellow of the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE), the American Academy of Arts & Sciences, and the Royal Academy of Engineering of the United Kingdom. He has won numerous awards for his research and teaching.

"Princeton in Entertainment" Dinner on February 15th

Desmond So '97

Desmond So (Class of ’97) is one of the busiest, international television presenters and bilingual MCs in Asia. He currently hosts two television programs reaching millions of viewers across Asia. Dolce Vita, a lifestyle and luxury-living program, airs on TVB Pearl and VIP Access, a movie-based entertainment news program, can be seen on Fox International’s STAR Movies. Desmond now stands in front of the camera after having worked behind it for three years at ABC, Inc. in New York. There, he was involved with shows such as The View, The Bachelor, All My Children, and Miss America. While living in New York, Desmond was also involved with Second Generation, a non-profit theater company devoted to bringing Asian American stories to the world's stage. In addition to his TV and MC work, Desmond is also a consultant who helps individuals and businesses build confidence through the practice of etiquette and effective communication (ww.njtrf.com).


Alan Lo '03

Alan Lo (Class of '03) is co-founder and director of Hong Kong-based Press Room Group, owner and operator of food and beverage outlets including The Press Room, Classified and The Pawn. He has many years of hospitality project experience, having worked for project management and development teams at a number of international hotel groups. He is active in promoting design, creativity and tourism in Hong Kong, serving as a Chairman of Hong Kong Ambassadors of Design and member of Tourism Strategy Group. He holds an AB in architecture from Princeton University.

MIT Sports Day - Sunday, February 27th

Please join your fellow Princetonians for a day of fun and sports on Sunday, February 27th. Singles, couples and families with children of all ages are welcome, and there are many events for children, segmented by age groups to give everyone a chance to participate. Please see the attached flyer for details.

Registration for the event is online. Please go to the registration link and click on "Non IC Account Registration". Ticket prices include a picnic lunch, and medals are awarded for all events. A trophy is awarded to the university with the most overall points; please join us in helping Princeton win the trophy for the first time since 2003.
