Happy New Year! Sunday Feb 19 Sports Day 2012 is here and it is better than ever!

MIT Sports Day brings together different schools, families, friends, and children for a fun day of sports. We will have some competitive track and field events, ball games (basketball, soccer, volleyball, dodgeball), as well as games that kids love. Guests and kids are welcome! Last year we had more than 150 guests from over 14 universities compete. Winners will receive medals and the winning school gets to bring home the Trophy (and of course, bragging rights).

Get your sporting gear out enjoy the sun! Come support your fellow alumni/friends (in your school T-shirt or color)!

As most of you know, the Ivy Ball has been organized annually by the Hong Kong alumni associations of Ivy League member schools - Brown, Columbia, Cornell, Dartmouth, Harvard, UPenn, Princeton and Yale - and MIT since 1989. It is one of the year's most highly-anticipated events and has consistently attracted hundreds of Ivy League alumni and their guests year after year.

Very special opportunity on Saturday, May 21^st! Lloyd Chao '81 has very kindly arranged for a limited number of us to visit Shaw Studios for a private tour. First come, first served on acceptances, so please reserve your place as soon as possible.

The schedule is 10:45 am arrival at the Studio Canteen for a brief introduction, then the private tour of the Studios (a walking tour that lasts about 90 minutes) and finish back at the Canteen for a casual lunch. The tour itself is free; lunch and transportation are self-pay.

Introductions of the Panelists

Sir Gordon Y.S. Wu ’58 P92 P94 h83, GBS, KCMG, FICE, is Chairman of the Board of the Asian infrastructure firm Hopewell Holdings Ltd., one of Hong Kong's largest real estate developers and a major player in large-scale engineering projects in China, Thailand, and Philippines. Sir Gordon graduated from Princeton with a Bachelor of Science degree in Engineering in 1958, and received Honorary Doctorate degrees from Hong Kong Polytechnic University, University of Strathclyde and University of Edinburgh. For more than forty years, Sir Gordon has developed and implemented a dynamic vision for advanced transport, public works, and infrastructure systems for China as well as for other countries in Asia.

Sir Gordon’s public service has been extensive, as a member of the Commission on Strategic Development of the Hong Kong SAR, the Chinese People’s Political Consultative Conference, the Business Advisory Council to the International Finance Corporation of the World Bank Group, the APEC Business Advisory Council, and the International Advisory Board of the Institute for International Business Communications.

Sir Gordon was elected to the Princeton Board of Trustees in 2008.

Dr. William Fung Kwok Lun ’70 P02, SBS, OBE, JP, Managing Director of Li and Fung, Ltd. of Hong Kong, graduated from Princeton with a Bachelor of Science in Engineering, holds an MBA from Harvard Business School, and was awarded, honoris causa, doctorates in Business Administration conferred by the Hong Kong University of Science and Technology and by the Hong Kong Polytechnic University. Dr. Fung is an entrepreneur who has revolutionized international trade through the concept of "borderless manufacturing," an energetic use of global outsourcing. Drawing from his education and business experience and acumen, he co-authored Competing in a Flat World: Building Enterprises for a Borderless World (Wharton School Publishing, 2007).

Dr. Fung was Chairman of the Pacific Economic Cooperation Council (PECC) and a member of the Economic Advisory Committee to the Financial Secretary. He is a past Chairman of both the Hong Kong General Chamber of Commerce and the Hong Kong Exporters’ Association. He sat on the board of HSBC Holdings and CLP Holdings Ltd.. In the public service arena, he was a Hong Kong SAR delegate to the Chinese People’s Political Consultative Conference.

Dr. Fung was elected to the Princeton Board of Trustees in 2009.

Dr. Vince Poor *77 is Princeton’s Dean of the School of Engineering and Applied Science and the Michael Henry Strater University Professor of Electrical Engineering.

He joined Princeton’s faculty in 1990, and has served as dean of engineering since 2006. Prior to joining the Princeton faculty, he was a faculty member at the University of Illinois, and he has held visiting appointments at a number of other institutions, including Harvard, Stanford and Imperial College (London).

As dean, Dr. Poor is responsible for the leadership of the engineering school, which comprises six academic departments and multiple research centers, and involves approximately 1/5 of Princeton’s undergraduates, 1/4 of its graduate students, and 1/3 of its research expenditures. In particular, he is responsible for realizing the engineering school’s vision of educating leaders for a technological world, with a focus on four major areas of societal need: energy, environment, health and security.

As a faculty member, Dean Poor’s teaching and research interests lie primarily in the area of wireless networking and related fields. He has authored or co-authored more than 1,000 publications in these fields, including a dozen books. Dean Poor is a member of the U. S. National Academy of Engineering, and is a Fellow of the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE), the American Academy of Arts & Sciences, and the Royal Academy of Engineering of the United Kingdom. He has won numerous awards for his research and teaching.

Desmond So '97

Desmond So (Class of ’97) is one of the busiest, international television presenters and bilingual MCs in Asia. He currently hosts two television programs reaching millions of viewers across Asia. Dolce Vita, a lifestyle and luxury-living program, airs on TVB Pearl and VIP Access, a movie-based entertainment news program, can be seen on Fox International’s STAR Movies. Desmond now stands in front of the camera after having worked behind it for three years at ABC, Inc. in New York. There, he was involved with shows such as The View, The Bachelor, All My Children, and Miss America. While living in New York, Desmond was also involved with Second Generation, a non-profit theater company devoted to bringing Asian American stories to the world's stage. In addition to his TV and MC work, Desmond is also a consultant who helps individuals and businesses build confidence through the practice of etiquette and effective communication (ww.njtrf.com).

Alan Lo '03

Alan Lo (Class of '03) is co-founder and director of Hong Kong-based Press Room Group, owner and operator of food and beverage outlets including The Press Room, Classified and The Pawn. He has many years of hospitality project experience, having worked for project management and development teams at a number of international hotel groups. He is active in promoting design, creativity and tourism in Hong Kong, serving as a Chairman of Hong Kong Ambassadors of Design and member of Tourism Strategy Group. He holds an AB in architecture from Princeton University.

It's that time of year again! MIT Sports Day will be held on Sunday, 31 January 2010 at HKU's Stanley Ho Sports Centre in Pokfulam.

For those of you who have not attended Sports Day before, it is a really great event in which schools compete against one another in a variety of events (basketball, volleyball, ultimate frisbee, dodgeball etc.). It is also a fun day out for the entire family -- we encourage all of you to bring your children as there are many kids' events too!

Pokfield Road is off Pokfulam Road, immediately past Hong Kong University and The Belcher's apartment complex. A number of buses and minibuses from Causeway Bay (via Wan Chai, Admiralty and Central) stop at the Pokfield Road bus terminus (Sinopec gas station):

Buses: 23, 40, 40M, 3B, 7, 71, 90B, 37A
Minibuses: 8, 10, 22, 28, 31

Your best bet to catch a big bus is from either Pacific Place or Queen's Road Central, or a minibus from Caine Road (get off at the gas station on Pokfulam Road and take the underpass to Pokfield Road). Vidya's building is the first one on the right, a pink low-rise. Alternatively, it is about a $40 cab ride from Central.

Dr. Diana Davies

Dr. Davies works with academic leaders and senior administrators to implement new policies and review existing ones to further strengthen Princeton's international activities. She serves as Secretary to the Council for International Teaching and Research, the faculty governance board that provides leadership and advocacy for Princeton's international endeavors. She works to forge new links between Princeton and foreign universities and helps to coordinate all aspects of campus internationalization, ranging from study abroad and support for international students and scholars, to facilitating international research collaborations. She assists Princeton faculty, students and administrators in pursuing a comprehensive approach to international education, from the new Bridge Year Program through to post-graduate opportunities such as Princeton in Africa and Princeton in Asia fellowships.

Dr. Davies will speak to us about Princeton’s unique strategy for internationalizing the curriculum and the campus as a whole, including details of specific programs and opportunities. She will tell us about the Bridge Year Program, academic year and summer study abroad programs, international internships, volunteer opportunities and post-graduation international fellowships in Asia, Africa and Latin America. Ms. Davies will also address the ways in which Princeton supports students in internationalizing their studies through financial aid and scholarships, as well as offering a range of international experiences on campus.

PCHK: An Evening with Professor Chou Chih-Ping (Thursday, 15 October 2009)

Apologies for the short notice, but we have planned a small, informal dinner with Professor Chou Chih-Ping of the East Asian Studies Department for next Thursday evening, October 15th. A number of you have studied under Professor Chou, who is here in Hong Kong for the next few months doing some quiet research for his next book. The venue is the upstairs portion of Cafe Iguana, 57 Wyndham Street. We only have room for 20 people, so it is "first come, first served" on reservations. Please let us know if you would like to attend by writing to princetonclubhk at gmail dot com. We have arranged a set price dinner for HK$200 (includes an appetizer, a main course, a drink and a small dessert), and younger alums (less than 5 years out) only need to pay HK$125. We will start at 7 pm and finish by 9 pm.

If there is more demand than 20 people, we will try to arrange another event for Professor Chou, but this smaller and informal setting will give those attending a chance to catch up with him more fully.

The Invitational Sports Day 2009 is coming up!

MIT has traditionally coordinated with peer universities including the Ivy Leagues (Brown University, University of Chicago, Columbia University, Cornell University, Harvard University, Princeton University, the University of Pennsylvania, Stanford University and Yale University) and Oxbridge on the Invitational Sports Day every year. A 1997 cum laude graduate of Princeton University with a degree from the Woodrow Wilson School of Public and International Affairs, Alexandra speaks Japanese and Mandarin Chinese.

Alexandra will be talking about the rapid changes in China's export manufacturing sector over the past year. She'll be giving answers to questions including: with tens of thousands of factories already bankrupt, what is the future of coastal China, which has depended heavily on exports for its economic development? What is happening in China's labor market, and what does this mean for China's economy? What are the social implications of these changes?

Invitation: An Evening with Peter Schindler

The Princeton Club of Hong Kong is very excited to kick off this year's events with the first of what we hope will become a regular series of guest lectures and talks. We are extremely fortunate to be joined by Peter Schindler next Tuesday, 11 November 2008.

Peter's story is a fascinating one: educated at MIT and INSEAD, he left the world of management consulting and embarked upon a journey that culminated in 2007, when Peter took to the roads of China for one hundred days in a 1950's Lotus. Upon completion of his 21,000km journey across China, Peter -- a former race-car driver -- auctioned his car off in a charity gala hosted by Yao Ming on behalf of the China Youth Development Foundation. Today, Peter writes about his adventures and continues to organize road excursions throughout China for interested travelers.

We are very honored to have Peter joining us next week and are hoping many of you can join us for his presentation, which promises to be inspirational as well as entertaining!

The Princeton Club of Hong Kong will be hosting the Princeton Regional Conference for Asia, March 13 - 15, 2008.
Not only will President Shirley Tilghman be in attendance, but a number of notable Princeton Professors will also be taking part. Panel discussions and lectures are planned on a number of important topics that are impacting the region and the world today. This is not to be missed.

We will provide further details as they are confirmed; and no doubt, the University will be sending invitations to alumni in the Asia region in due course.

Just a quick post to let you know that the annual Hong Kong MIT Sportsday is rapidly approaching and you should all mark your calendars!

Location: Wu Kai Sha Youth Village, New Territories
Price: $120 (adults); $60 (children)

The price includes a BBQ lunch, and there will also be a bus service available from Central for an additional $25 per head.

For those of you who have not attended in the past, MIT Sportsday is a great event for everyone, young and old - families are most welcome! With the great weather we've been having it should be a terrific occasion to get some fresh air and exercise while showing off our Princeton school spirit!
