Speaker and Event Background: Alexandra Harney is a veteran foreign correspondent and author of The China Price: The True Cost of Chinese Competitive Advantage, a critically acclaimed investigation into the social and environmental cost of China's manufacturing success published by Penguin in 2008. Named a Best Business Book of 2008 by Strategy + Business Magazine, The China Price has been translated into five languages and optioned for adaptation to film and television. During her nine years at the Financial Times, she covered Japan, China and the UK and was an editor at the newspaper in London. Now a freelance writer, frequent speaker on China and global supply chains, and the founder of a boutique research firm, Alexandra has also contributed to National Public Radio, the BBC, TIME, The Wall Street Journal, The Washington Post, the Times, Slate and many other media. A 1997 cum laude graduate of Princeton University with a degree from the Woodrow Wilson School of Public and International Affairs, Alexandra speaks Japanese and Mandarin Chinese.

Alexandra will be talking about the rapid changes in China's export manufacturing sector over the past year. She'll be giving answers to questions including: with tens of thousands of factories already bankrupt, what is the future of coastal China, which has depended heavily on exports for its economic development? What is happening in China's labor market, and what does this mean for China's economy? What are the social implications of these changes?
